The abbreviation CAT means “Computer Aided Translation”, i.e. translation with the help of a computer. Sometimes the terms “translation memory” or “TM” are used to refer to the same tool. A CAT tool is a computer program which makes the work of the translator easier.
The work is made more efficient thanks to these three main functions:
- The CAT tool divides the text into segments (sentences or parts
of sentences) and works with them so as to make the translation easier
and faster. In some tools, e.g. Trados, each segment is displayed
in a special panel and the translation is written under the original text. - The translation of each segment is stored together with the source text. The source text and the translation will always be displayed as translation units. It is possible to return to the segment at anytime to check
the translation. Some special functions enable navigation in the text and help when searching segments which are necessary to be translated
or proofread (quality control). - The main function of the CAT tool is the storing of a translation unit into the database called the translation memory (TM), so that it can be used again for any other text or even, for example, in the same text. Using
the “fuzzy search” function of the CAT tools it is possible to find segments which do not match 100%. This saves the time and effort
of the translator and helps him/her to use uniform terminology.
In addition to these main functions, CAT tools can contain many other functions to simplify translation and increase productivity.
With the aim of saving time and decreasing costs, we fully use this method.
Our staff is highly experienced with the latest versions of the most popular translation memory packages. We work with the following software CAT packages:
- Trados, SDLX
- Logoport
- Across
- etc.
